EP. 32 SECRET COMPARTMENT BOX

Today on Modern Builds I'm building a walnut secret compartment box with some help from my friends and BRUSSO Hardware. The design was inspired by watching other secret compartment boxes from youtubers like Dustin Penner. Thanks for watching and don't forget to check out BRUSSO's website.

STEP ONE: SQUARE AND SMOOTH

I ran my piece of walnut through the planer and the table saw to square everything up.

STEP TWO: DADO's

I cut three dado's on one side of the board. One for the lid, one for the bottom, and one 1/8" dado for the bottom of the compartment creating the space for the "hidden" drawer.

STEP THREE: CUT IT UP.

Next I cut my miters for the box making sure to maintain proper orientation for grain matched corners.

STEP FOUR: MAKE THE DRAWER

I marked and cut out the face for the drawer on the back piece on the scroll saw. then I used scrap 1/2" and 1/8" plywood to make the rest of the drawer using simple construction.

STEP FIVE: GLUE IT UP

Next, I cut the 1/8" plywood for the bottom of the big compartment and glued the box up.

After the frame of the box was complete, I cut a piece of 1/2" plywood for the bottom of the box.

STEP SIX: BRUSSO

Next I added the hardware and the lid. For all the details on installing it, make sure and check out the video.

I sanded the box to 220 grit.

STEP SEVEN: FINISH IT UP

I put a coat of natural danish oil as a finish.

That's all there is to it! I hope you enjoyed it and go out and make your own. If you do, don't forget to tag me in a picture of it!
