DIY plywood media console

modern builds: s.02 Ep.36

Over the week of Christmas / new years I thought it would be a good time to try something new that I’ve had in mind for quite a while. For the past few months I’ve been curious about bending pipe to incorporate into furniture. At first, I planned on using 3/4” copper pipe, along with an electrical conduit bender to bend the copper into a U-shape leg assembly. To my surprise, though, I found that copper is way too brittle to use with a conduit bender. Thankfully, while I was at home depot picking everything up I decided to grab a couple of 10’ “sticks” of conduit just in case.

The video shows my process of figuring out how the conduit bender works and how it affects the final dimensions in the piece. I was surprised how dramatic the bend was and how tall that made the leg assembly overall. In hindsight, I wish I build a 6’ long cabinet for these legs rather than 4’ to make everything match a little better. I’ve included dimensions for both in the downloadable PDF plans below.
